The UE Red Warriors got their first defeat at the expense of an unpredictable UST Growling Tigers in the main game of the UAAP 73rd season’s opening weekend. Coach Pido Jarencio’s proud players were able to control the offensive flow until the final minute of the regulation.
Even with an incredible performance from Ken Acibar who topped the Red Warriors with 17 points and a hot perimeter shooting from rookie Biboy Enguio were not enough to control the tide for the Red Warriors. UST only led by 2 points in the end of the 3rd period. But, the Growling Tigers has a secret weapon to unleased in the name of a rookie from RTU named Daquioag, limiting the Red Warriors to make only a single field goal within 6 minutes of the 4th period.
With UST’s good perimeter defense thus limiting both Paul Lee and James Martinez to score 7 points each. While, Teng, Bautista, and the rookie Daquioag, all had made good perimeter shots to control the tempo to give the UE Red Warriors its 1st loss this season.
UE- Acibar 17, Enguio 10, Zamar 9, Reyes 8, Martinez 7, Lee 7, Santos 5, Ayala 4, Razon 0, Casajeros 0, Duran 0.
Final Score: UST 80 – UE 67
