73rd Season’s Battle of the East Rivalry belongs to the Far East

A missed lay-up by Raffy Reyes in the last 17 seconds of regulation may be the topic by every UEnian students, alumni, and fans of the UE Red Warriors after the conclusion of this season’s annual Battle of the East rivarly against their arch nemesis FEU Tamaraws last August 15, 2010 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

An up tempo start by the FEU Tamaraws after coming from a loss they immediately showed their offensive capacity with an 8-0 run lead by the game best player RR Garcia (scored 23 points), Reil Cervantes, JR Cawaling, and Chris Exciminiano to end the 1st quarter 21-10.

In just 2 minutes of the 2nd quarter, it was still a Morayta ball game when they rally a 16 points lead, but an inspired Paul Zamar suddenly erupted with a 6-0 run. Maybe, because of the presence on the game venue of his proud father, UE’s former coach and player Boyzie Zamar. Then, RR Garcia answered his own blitz with a 9 points production to magnify the lead at 18 points. But UE’s guard trio led by Paul Zamar, James Martinez and Lordy Casajeros diminish that lead by an 11-0 run to end the 2nd quarter, 41-34.

The tempo of the game continues on the side of the Red Warriors when Ken Acibar and Paul Lee joined the bandwagon to push the ball inside the paint, it was successful and they were able to cut down the lead to only 3 points, 58-55. In the final canto, the FEU Tamaraws excerted its might to make the lead back to 9 points, throughout the remaining minutes the Red Warriors close the gap that separates them with the FEU Tamaraws and at the last two minutes mark, Raffy Reyes, shoot a timely 3 point bucket, to trim the lead to 72-70. And, a crucial stop at the backcourt, a struggling Paul Lee pushes the ball hard to the basket but he missed, fortunately Erwin Duran got an offensive rebound and made a basket to tie the game almost 1 minute remaining. With a final hurrah, 17 seconds remaining Paul Lee made a good decoy plot that give Raffy Reyes an easy shot in the basket, but he missed, that may have sealed the game for the Red Warriors. In the overtime period, the FEU Tamaraws remain their composure and out score UE by 11 points against 5 to give the Red Warriors its 7th game baffle this season.

100 Percent Warrior

Keep in mind the difference between a winner's and a loser's mentality. Winners focus on winning big—not just how to win, but how to win big. Losers, however, don't focus on losing; they just focus on getting by!

Each Warrior wants to leave the mark of his will, his signature, on important acts he touches. This is not the voice of ego but of the human spirit, raising up and declaring that it has something to contribute to the solution of the hardest problems, no matter how vexing!
