After the zonal of the PCCL, the UE Red Warriors will begin the process of re-organizing their line-up and definitely the coaching staff will dramatically change.
As of now, four spots will be available in the team’s roster for next season. Two players already expired their eligible years to play which are James Martinez and Raffy Reyes; one player on the other hand, will not come back because of UAAP age limit rule which is Ezer Kit Rosopa; and, one player was booted out in the team at the early part of 2nd round elimination because of not following simple UE dorm rules. Two guard positions and two forward/center positions will be open for worthy hopefuls.
If Paul Lee really stick to his promise that he will still play for his last eligable year as a Red Warrior (let’s us pray he does), he definitely will be the team captian and be again the team’s go-to-guy. While Kenneth Acibar is a rising superstar and still be a big threat inside the paint with his superb athleticism. The flow of offense will revolve on these two lads, that’s why it’s important to intensively and carefully pick who will fill in the vacated spots. There are some bright prospects in the Team B that are ready to take the role, but it’s too early to name names and the recruitment market will be busy again.
The upcoming PCCL zonal will be a great venue to whether the team will have to drop atleast one or two more players in the roster. In my opinion, one player has definitely to go back in the Team B, but let us wait if his performance in the post-season will be enough to retain his spot in the roster for next year’s pre-season.
And speaking of the upcoming PCCL, after the team’s zonal campaign and hopefully enters in the top 16. The next issue would be the team’s head coach and his staff. If the UE management are still silent on the issue of Coach Lawrence Chongson’s contract then we have to prepare ourselves for a new coach by January. There are so many great names in the coaching market to take the position, but right now the team badly needs of a coach which have a good coaching credentials, plus have a high status and reputation in the Philippine basketball so that the new coach will attract good players to play for UE in the future. Again, it’s too early to name names.
For the rest of the coaching staff’s structure, definitely it will undertake a complete overhaul, but the UE management should consider on retaining Rene Baena. This guy has already proven his importance as an assistant coach. Aside from Rene Baena, the coaching staff should have a fix position and not co-terminous with the head coach.
We have to watch if the team will learn their lesson of season 73 and able to build up teamwork and chemistry especially that next year will be more tougher season for them with the emergence of competitive teams in the league.
